Patient Care brings primary care clinicians a lot of medical news every day—it’s easy to miss an important study. The Daily Dose provides a concise summary of one of the website's leading stories you may not have seen.

On February 28, 2025, we reported on a study published in the journal npj Women's Health that was designed to describe perimenopause symptom severity and rates of confirmed perimenopause in US women aged 30 years and older.

The study

Researchers analyzed symptoms self-reported by 4432 American women aged 30 years and older responding to a survey conducted online and in the Flo app. The mean age of participants was 42.6 years.

The findings

Among women 30 to 35, 55.4% reported symptoms that met the criteria for “moderate” or “severe” on the validated and widely used Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). The proportion increased to 64.3% among women aged 36 to 40. The mean age at which respondents reported seeking treatment for menopause-associated symptoms, however, was 56 years or older.

Authors' comments

"Further research is needed to understand the temporal patterns of perimenopause symptoms across age groups and to understand whether our findings of significant symptoms in individuals younger than 45 years and psychological symptoms being more common in early perimenopause can be replicated."
