After conservative ring removal methods--eg, lubricants, the string technique--have failed, but before reaching for the ring cutter, try this:Carefully wrap the finger with a rubber tourniquet, starting from the tipand working up to the edge of the ring. Have the patient lie supine on the examinationtable, with his or her arm pointed straight up toward the ceiling. After about 5 minutes--and as soon as the patient lowers his arm--quicklyremove the tourniquet, apply copious amounts of lubricant, and slide the ringoff. The extended arm position temporarily decreases edema in the fingerand provides an opportunity for rapid ring removal.-- Thomas G.
