Much of the morbidity and mortality related to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is attributed to inadequate implementation of prevention strategies and to uncontrolled ASCVD risk factors.

The 2019 clinical guideline on primary prevention of cardiovascular disease from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) emphasizes the importance of shared decision-making between clinicians and patients to enhance the patient's adoption and ongoing implementation of healthful lifestyle practices as the first line of prevention.

The following Guideline Topline slides highlight the ACC/AHA recommendations on assessing ASCVD risk and on promoting lifestyle choices to prevent ASCVD for an at-a-glance refresher.
