Dr Swanson discusses the resurgence of measles and emphasizes the safety and efficacy of the measles vaccine.

The re-emergence of measles was a topic Elizabeth Swanson, MD, highlighted during her session "Big Rashes in Little Patients" at the 2025 American Academy of Dermatology meeting in Orlando, Florida. The latest US CDC data show that a total of 301 cases of measles have been confirmed in the US as of March 13, 2025. With current vaccination rates across the US falling below the 95% threshold needed for herd immunity, measles outbreaks are likely to become more common across the US, not just in isolated areas. "So, while West Texas is dealing with this outbreak right now, the rest of the United States is certainly not immune to it," Dr Swanson told Patient Care Online via Zoom. "We're going to start seeing pockets of it across the country unless vaccination rates improve."

In the video above, Dr Swanson also addresses vaccine safety, emphasizing the importance of relying on scientific evidence rather than misinformation.
