In a presentation at IDWeek 2023, Gopi Patel, MD, discussed the role of health care professionals (HCPs) in the spread of respiratory viruses in the hospital setting. Topics included in Dr Patel’s presentation—titled “Respiratory Virus Infection Prevention and Management, From the Immunosuppressed Patient to the Healthcare Provider”— were respiratory viruses (eg, SARS-CoV-2, influenza) in immunocompromised patients, the role of HCPs in nosocomial transmission, presenteeism among HCPs, and the utilization of infection prevention measures (eg, masking, wearing personal protective equipment) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the video below, Patient Care Online asked Dr Patel about what she thought were the most important takeaways from the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of nosocomial infections and how those lessons may translate to outpatient settings like primary care.
