When patients' deep tendon reflexes in the ankle and knee are diminished, have them clasp their hands together and pull outward with both arms.
When patients' deep tendon reflexes in the ankle and knee are diminished, have them clasp their hands together and pull outward with both arms. This maneuver recruits neurons in the thoracic and cervical spine area, lessens the inhibition that may occur at lower levels, and often enables you to detect a reflex in the ankle or knee that might otherwise be missed.
