Obesity rates in 16 US states reached 35% or above in 2020 with 3 states reaching nearly 40%. Looking at the country as a whole for 2020, more than half of adults in every US state had either overweight or obesity. The combined rate of adults having overweight and obesity ranges from a "low" of 57.3% in the District of Columbia to 72.8% in Mississippi.
These figures are from the 18th annual report by Trust for America's Health on the American obesity crisis. The report draws on data from a variety of public sources including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, and the National Survey of Children's Health.
