Menopausal Vasomotor Symptoms: Clinician and Patients Both Need Education, Expert Says

Commentary

Less than 15% of women with menopause receive treatment for VMS, suggesting a need a for more education and awareness, according to JoAnn Pinkerton, MD.

"The most disruptive symptoms that menopausal women have are hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances and mood changes."

There are safe and effective treatment options available, JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, went on to explain in a recent interview with Patient Care Online, however, "less than 15% of women are being treated, and it's an issue on both sides."

"Women do not need to suffer in silence," Dr Pinkerton, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and division director of Midlife Health at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia, stated. In the video above, she discusses how clinician hesitancy and patient perceptions about the safety of different treatment options play a role in this gap in care, and how addressing the gap can help improve the quality of life for women with menopause.

Dr Pinkerton is also the national lead for the OASIS clinical trial program examining the efficacy and safety of elinzanetant for moderate-to-severe VMS.
