The bird flu threat remains low, according to public health authorities, but awareness and vigilance will help keep it that way. Here are 9 things you need to know.


Avian influenza type A viruses rarely infect humans, according to the CDC, but cases have been reported and most often are the result of unprotected contact with infected wild birds or with surfaces where avian saliva or mucous has been deposited.

Since March, there have been 66 confirmed cases of bird flu reported in the US but illnesses associated with the virus have been mostly mild and detected among farm employees exposed to sick poultry or dairy cows.

"Right now, the H5N1 bird flu situation remains primarily an animal health issue. However, CDC is watching this situation closely and taking routine preparedness and prevention measures in case this virus changes to pose a greater human health risk."
