Ulcerative Colitis, Pregnancy...and Prednisone?

How would you proceed with this patient?

A 28-year-old woman in her first trimester of pregnancy is experiencing a flare of her ulcerative colitis. You want to start prednisone therapy.

Answer:  A. Facial deformities.

There is a small risk of oral clefts (lip or palate) developing in babies born to women who take prednisone in the first trimester. Corticosteroids also have been associated with premature delivery and low birth weight. There are no known associations between corticosteroids and short stature or autism.
